Just thought I would throw a question out there to see if anyone has
tried using a Fire Helmet Camera? In addition to the still photos, I
have started taking some video of fire calls and training. Of course
going back and forth between still photos and video takes a little time,
more time processing, and may lose a good photo shot.
Although I am the designated photographer for several volunteer FD's, I
am also a member/firefighter of these FD's usually in part or full gear
while taking photos depending on type of incident. But 99.9% have my
helmet on. That is why I was thinking a helmet camera might be of
assistance to me in taking videos while taking still photos.
If anyone has any experience with helmet cameras or knows about them, I
am looking for information to purchase one. I have seen the on-line
videos from youtube and so forth. But figured I might be able to get
some first hand knowledge from other Fire Photographers.
I have a helmet video camera. It is pretty cool. I bought mine from the Fire Helmet Cam online. I do not recommend buying one from ebay. They cannot take the heat from a fire. This is my second helmet camera. The first one could not handle enough video, but is a good camera. I have the FC3 and it is very simple and small. I use it for training and the fire investigator gets a copy for invesitigations if needed. It works great for roundtable discussions after the fire also.

Thanks - I took a look at the FC3. Does that come with everything needed or must you purchase additional items for it? Did you buy the larger 8GB Micro SD card for it?
I also see they have a FC Mini HD model. Have you heard anything about that one? Which one would you suggest? Just trying to get an idea.
Although I have not yet made the leap to helmet cam...its in the near future because Ive gone from photographer to asst chief in a single step....and I still need to take video for the news. Ive done some research on them. Avoid the cheaper versions. They tend to be low resolution...you wont be happy with the results. There are many to chose from now. I see one helmet manufacturer now has a custom helmet with a recessed area for a light to mount to the right of the shield area, I suspect it wont be long before someone also makes one with a dedicated area for the camera too. My suggestion would be go to youtube, search for helmet cam video, find one that looks really good, then email the poster to see what brand of camera he/she is using because there are a flood of crappy chinese helmet cams out there that simply suck.
I can see a time coming when we have to plug our helmets in every night to charge them with a built in light, built in camera and maybe even a GPS tracking device so that the IC can see where each FF is on the fireground. Im hearing some discussing too about a possible wireless link from a helmet camera to a Ipad so that the IC can see what YOU are seeing inside the structure.
do u have a site where u can look at these helmet cams.... I would like too get 1 for i take pictures @ firescenes for a few departments... thxs....

I have looked at several types. There are many out there but my three concerns are night/darkness, water and heat. Although I probably won't be inside the fire area. The best I've seen so far for fire related, and i am leaning towards would be "Fire Cam" - https://firevideo.net/store/index.php?main_page=products_all
The problem will be the mounting. The normal side helmet mount may not work well as I still plan to take still photos. Therefore my hands/arms will come up to eye level and may block the view of a side mounted helmet cam. Ideal would be a top of the helmet or front mounted helmet cam. But I haven't found any such mountings. Extra strong velcro may work.
