A good excercise to show why we are supposed to use plain english radio traffic.

I have used this excercise in class before when I am teaching some of the older members who don't understand why we need to switch to plain english when it comes to radio traffic. Typically I go online and print off a copy of 10-codes from different states and hand them out. I then hand them the following statement and tell them to decode the transmission and write down their answers. It usually gets through to them after reading what everyone got. Feel free to use this if you like but do me a favor and post your decoding of the transmission below.

"Any County Dispatch, this is EMS 123. This unit is 10-41 and 10-7. We are able to respond to all 10-50's, 10-70's, and any signal 34's. At that time we will advise when we are 10-8, 10-23, and again when we are 10-24. At no time will this unit be 10-6. It will remain this way until such time as we go 10-42."

"Any county Dispatch, this is EMS 123. This unit is ON DUTY and AVAILABLE. We are able to respond to all MVA'S, STRUCTURE FIRES, and PSYCH PATIENTS. At that time we will advise when we are ENROUTE, ON SCENE, and CLEAR OF THE SCENE. At no time will this unit be BUSY. It will remain this wayuntil such time as we go OFF DUTY."
Who still uses 10 codes? Heck I teach plain english for size up. No more multi story, or Type III, or residential dwellings, or mercantile structures etc.

Is 2 multi story? Is 10 multi story?
Is a single wide mobile home a residential dwelling? Is a 5,000 sq foot 6 bedroom McMansion a residential dwelling?
Is a 7/11 a mercantile structure? Is a Walmart a mercantile structure.
Do all firefighters really know the 5 types of construction?

How about a large 3 story wood frame house? Or your on the scene of a 7/11 store or Walmart with ..... as part of your size up? I am pretty sure if you described your building like this everyone would know what you are talking about.
