I have been teaching in the fire service for the past 3 years and over the years the rookies seem to be getting the attitude of "i know it i know it" and it gets a little old. I have shown them the LODD reports and the MAYDAY videos showing them that things like this can happen to just anybody, its not just the career or paid firefighters that bad things that happen to. The other day they were learning about the basics of fire science and fire behavior and it was asked why do we need to learn these things, don't we just put the wet stuff on the red stuff. I was flabbergasted that they were being narrow minded and not wanting to learn about the important parts of training and why the fire does certain things. Thoughts like that is what scare me as a firefighter and that is why i do teach, but getting them to understand this has become a chore, or atleast that is what it feels like.
I feel you guys. I have been teaching recruit classes for several years here, and I get the same thing. Then once there on the floor they think the learning is over and all they have to do is go through the motions, take calls, eat and watch TV. And some give attitude when called to drill. This makes me sick. I just hope they open their eyes soon before somone get hurt, or worse.
