Hey people's.....a topic of discussion has come up within my jurisdiction with regards to the installation of fire alarm systems. Was wonder if your municipalities, ordinances, etc require "certified fire alarm system installers" or if general electricians are allowed to wire in fire alarms. I am interested because we are in process of reviewing local amendments to IBC, IFC, NFPA, etc. Thank you in advance-----BE SAFE and SMILE
NFPA, all alarm installs must be done by a master electrician that holds a valid State card for "Fire Alarm", aand folks we are not familiar w/ submit what is called a "Certificate of Fitness" and that lays out the quals they posess.
Our State requires that fire alarm installations be done by a licensed fire alarm contractor. The installer can work under the license of the contractor but someone that is licensed has to sign off on the installation. Hope this helps.
I work in the private sector and we hire an outside fire alarm contractor that is licensed for fire alarm installations through the State of Maryland for all of our new installations. Each technician works under the license of a Master Electrician and is either NIOSH certified for fire alarm installations or is working toward that goal. They are responsible for the tie-ins of specific devices, fire alarm panels and communication lines. Phone lines to the alarm panel are run by Verizon, our local phone company. Wiring is run from point to point for devices (Smoke detectors, door holders, duct detectors, etc.) largely by a separate contractor, also working under the license of a Master Electrician.
Electrical wiring is electrical wiring. For activation of a specific device, a normally open or normally closed switch is a simple installation by any electrical contractor. We often have these types of installations done by an outside electrical contractor for speed of installations. The fire alarm contractor is able to run this wiring when need be.
I hope this helps. If you have more specific questions, feel free to send me a message.
