Well its opening day here in Iredell county in North Carolina and wow what a morning. Temp was about 48 degrees, no wind, what a perfect morning! I hunt on my inlaws land of about 75 acres wish is about half a grass field 1/4 hardwoods and 1/4 scrub brush. I have a big box stand set up on the edge of the field which over looks a corn pile abot 60 yrds away. My dad hunts with me most of the time so we just sit in the box stand togehter. Day light breaks and they start moving in, 1st was a lone doe. She kinda seemed spooked and kept looking back. I figured she was looking for her little ones but nothing ever came. I told dad there might be a buck comin so get ready. Well about a min after she left the field, here he came. Now in NC deer dont get big bodied like in other states so a 130lbs deer is a good one. The one that walked up this morning was aleast 150lbs but had a messed up rack. best i could tell it was a 5pointer and he was old. I told dad if you get a shot, take it.

Well he came right to the corn pile, stepped broadside and gave dad a perfect shot. Dad beared, down sqeezed the trigger and....................snap! MISS FIRE!!!!!!! The buck turn and looked right at us. I couldnt help but laugh and i tried to reach for my gun but by this time dad was cussing so much i couldnt have shot that deer if I wanted since i was worried about falling out of the stand since I was laughing so had!

Next thing I know dad has his gun broke down trying to clean it and Ill be damned if a lead doe I have been trying to take out for a few years walks out in the filed blowing and stomping all the way up the field. She has never gave me a good shot at her so she is still walking around.

I guess thats why they call it hunting not killing. But at least I got a good story out of it. Now all that is left to do is cut dads shirt tail off and try again.
