I had an opportunity to speak with a Gulf Power lineman today at a call and he explained some of the concerns they have about the FD pulling a meter.
1.) The first concern they have is several times lately while pulling meters gulf power lineman have had the prongs break off with the meter. This causes an arc as well as a possibility of being electrocuted. The only reason they were not electrocuted was two reasons according to the lineman. The first reason was because they were wearing rubber insulated gloves and the second reason is because they know the proper technique of removing a meter.
The lineman said he has seen some meters lately that appeared to be removed by an axe. The glass cases were broken or damaged. Gulf Power requests that the FD secure power by the breakers if possible to reduce the risk of electrocution.
2.) The second concern was that the FD removed the meter and left the scene thus leaving the power box open and the potential for someone being electrocuted if they were to attempt to access the box. REMEMBER by removing the meter this only secures the power inside the structure and the box is still HOT !!!!.
If possible a unit should remain on-scene until a gulf power rep arrives to cap the meter box.
Stay tuned for more information and STAY SAFE !!!!
