before i get into the question just want to give a little background. i was an EMT in Va for 6 years before moving to ny. during my time here in ny my emt in va lapsed. so here i am taking my NY EMT. (which is like a refresher to me)

the other day we were doing our initial assesment hands on lab. the dispatch information was for a male in his fortys, uncontrolled bleeding. scene was secure.
while checking my ABC's i could see his airway was open and he was breathing alright due to the fact he was talking. so i jumped to C which was an obvious arterial bleed in his brachial artery. so i skipped the look listen feel and and skipped listening for lung sounds and went straight into controlling the bleed.(since he was talking he was breathing) i had a debate with the lab instructer because he said i must always do my abc's in order. my argue was if hes talking fine then we atleast know he was breathing and at that time the bleed was my priority. what are your thoughts? was i in the right or in the wrong. granted i know how we do things in class are not always how they are done in the field
