We don't have any signs but we do have plenty of warning lights. Along with fire fighters we also have our local EMA and County Officers to block the traffic. If all else fails they have to go thru a big truck to get to me. Most of all I pray everyones watching where they need to while my a** is hanging out there.

We have cones set up, but understand where your coming from. What freaks me out the most is the Police that seem not to wear a traffic vest. As they are dressed most times in black or dark blue. Same with the EMT's as you don't see them in traffic vest. Although we tend to park the big red truck in such a way that it does block traffic. We all know that people are not paying any attention to the traffic, just looking towards where we are working. Face it, we are just as bad if off duty or out of state or town and come across. We are looking as well! We have some major roads around here as well as Free Ways and it can be nasty. No where to go other than jumping the centre concrete into the on-coming traffic.

Unfortunatelly we don't have any freeways or interstates in our area, but we do have a casino that just opened a year ago that brings em in by the busload. Wouldn't be to bad if they would stay on the highways but they cut across the country roads. we're already training and drawing up plans for the bus wrecks we knows coming.

with interstate 70 and 71 running through our town, this is a topic of interest. We have had a couple firefighters seriously injured at accident scenes. Our initial freeway assignment is a medic, heavy rescue, engine Co, and an EMS coordinator. If it is going to be a working extracation then the engine blocks at least 2 lanes of traffic, and the coordinator can block one with his vehicle. The cops are usually not to bad about it even when we just plain shut down a freeway. ( Talk about FUBARing traffic) But our first priority is rescuer safety.
