God at the door Revelation 3:20
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
This is a familiar text to church goers. It is often used for Sunday School lessons. It is familiar in its text. A man is standing at the door knocking. How simple this is to relate to.
Let me set the scene for you. John is writing Revelations while he is exiled on the Isle of Patmos. He receives these revelations from Christ. He receives Christ’s messages to the seven churches. And then we see the word behold. To us this means heads-up! Like the instructor saying, “you might want to write this down, you may see it again.” This gets our attention. When this happens, Christ is no longer giving his messages to seven churches, but rather giving a message to an individual. Let’s break this down to understand it better.
Behold – “Hey, listen up. This is important.”
I stand at the door and knock – This is your heart’s door.
This is a humble place. It is difficult to find people to knock on doors. It is hard to get people to go door-to-door to do anything. Door knocking can be a frightening experience. This is how Jesus is, humble. He was born in a manger. You can’t find much more humble beginnings. He lived among men. He is God himself, but He live among the sinners He came to save. And He was crucified. This was the most degrading of all forms of execution. Jesus’ whole life was lived humbly.
Jesus understands our needs because He has been through everything we could possible go through. There is nothing we can ever face that He has not only faced, but overcome. He died for our sins, was buried and rose again. He has defeated death, and He did so to save us from our sins.
Jesus stands at the door and knocks. There is no grand show of His knocking. There is no voice from heaven announcing to us the He is knocking. There is only the quiet knocking on our hearts door.
How does Jesus knock? He knocks with His hand. This is the hand of God. This is the hand that moves circumstances. This is the hand that holds the whole world. The hand of God is setting the stage for prophetic fulfillment. All the nations and nature move according to his plan.
Jesus also calls as he knocks. He says “if any man hear my voice.” How does He speak to the world? He speaks through his word, the Bible. We can not receive Jesus’ guidance in life unless we are in His word. He also speaks through His servants, ministers of the gospel. This is the purpose of ministers, to minister to God’s people, to be another way that Jesus passes His word on to His people. He also speaks though the lives of Christians. John 13:35 gives us some insight into this.
John 13:35 KJVR
(35) By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Jesus calls us in love, but also with urgency. What He has to offer will change your life forever.
What will Jesus do if we open the door?
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Jesus says here that “I will come into him and sup with him, and he with me.” The word sup here means not only to have a meal, but a “principle meal” or supper. There is more of a connection with someone you have supper with than someone you have say, lunch with.
There is a sure promise here. “If you open the door, I will come in.” The is no waivering or doubt in this statement.
How can Jesus come in? He comes into our lives by His Spirit. When He comes in, He brings to us great and precious promises, as well as an escape from the corruption that is in the world, as seen in II Peter 1:4:
2 Peter 1:4 KJVR
(4) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
When Jesus comes into you life, your body becomes His temple, in which His Spirit resides. We see this in I Corinthians 6:19-20:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 KJVR
(19) What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
(20) For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
This passage also reminds us that we were bought with a price. Jesus shed His own blood to redeem our souls. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Do you feel Him knocking? Can you hear His Voice? Will you open the door and let Him in?
All you have to do is to allow Him access. Just open the door and let Him in. All that takes is a simple prayer. Here is an example: "Lord Jesus, I need You. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be." If you have given your life to Christ, it is my prayer that you will take these few verses and allow them to enter your daily life, living for Christ daily.
