You're the second-due truck company officer and have been given the assignment by command to perform a 360 of this large single story commerical occupancy. There are two teams of three firefighters advancing a 2.5 inch attack line into the structure from the Alpha side.
Based upon your observations, what are you going to communicate to the Incident Commander?
Discuss what you see, what are the indications telling you?
What are the safety concerns?
What's the risk profile of the building?
Read the Smoke....
Read the Building...
Read the fire.....
While you're getting ready to communicate, You hear radio transmissions from the interior crews that they're experiencing significant heat conditions while advancing in. You also hear transmissions that a truck compay crew has laddered the roof and has been tasked to perform vertical ventilation. The balance of your company (that had been staged on the Alpha side) have been ordered by command to support interior ops with the engine company.
My biggest concern is the saftey of the interior crews and Ladder Co going to roof. The building appers to be a type 2 construction with deteriation of the walls which could indicate expanding of steel bar joists in roof. The smoke is thick, black and pushing from cracks around the wall. I would anticipate a hot, deep seated fire that could flash soon. If an "all clear" has been given I would be thinking of setting up Defensive operations at this time. I would not send crews to the roof. Re-position ladder crew to RIC operations, open exterior doors for possible egress for attack crews.
