It was a 2 story structure fire.The bottom floor was a store where a tailor did clothes and sold textiles.The second floor was an apartment.It was on our main street in town so all the buildings were ajoined.
The pager went off at about 7:30 in the morning on the 21st of January and it was 27 degrees below.Me and my buddy packed up and went in to the apartment above to search because a retired FF from our department lived across the street and he told us who lived there and we all knew him,he was a mentally challenged man.
When we were going up the stairs they were steep and narrow and I couldn't see my hand if I would have pressed it against my mask from the thick black smoke from all the textiles burning in the store that was fully involved when we rolled up.
When we got to his door we broke it open and entered and as me and my partner were just getting down on our hands and knees my partner touched him about 3 Ft. inside the door.We scooped him up and drug him down the stairs and we were meet at the bottom outside by paramedics and fellow firefighters and they started CPR and the guy ended up living but was in the hospital for quite a while.
That was my best call cause I got to rescue a guy and save his life and my partner and I were awarded a medal of bravery for it.Not that I deserved it because it's the job but it was nice to get the recognition for sure and the hardware give me something to remember that day forever and I have a story to talk about to other people.
That day was just brutal with the weather conditions being so cold.Packs were actually freezing up on us and that retired FF i told you about has a store that he opened up to us for rehab and the community came together and brought coffee and soup and snacks cause we were there all day and some of the night and then we had to do shifts to watch the place incase of flare ups and people trying to sneak in till the investigaters got there.
