I am about to move to Fayetteville for my wife to go to graduate school and I want to become a firefighter. I was wondering what are the steps I need to take to do this? I know I need to go talk to a department but I will not be going up there for a while and I want to talk to them in person. (and I want to begin as soon as possible training) I know I need to get my emt certification but after that I am not sure what else. Do I need to go to Fire Acedemy or what? I have looked all over the net but I cant find anything that tells me what I need to do. Thanks for the help and hope to be in the firefighter brotherhood.

Contact the local City Fire Dept. that has jurisdiction directly OR the "Department Of Emergency Management" for the county in which you plan on moving to.Full time Departments and Volunteer Departments each have their own training standards and requirments(usually thru or in conjuction with the Ark. Fire Academy)for employment, as well as the time frame in which to get each certification. The academy website can be found at a href="http://www.sautech.edu">www.sautech.edu >.
Also. There are several levels of E.M.S. certification that range from "First Responder" (40 hr.class) to "EMT Advanced"(several months) and again, every department has it's own standards, requirements and time frame, however usually at least basic first aid and CPR/AED are the only requirements to get started.Good luck and welcome to the Fire Service!
