DETROIT -- An 8-year-old girl who was rescued by neighbors from a house fire on Detroit's southwest side Thursday morning has died.

After the fire, the girl was transported to Children's Hospital in critical condition. She was put on life support.

The Wayne County Morgue confirmed that the girl passed away Friday morning.

Neighbor Liviu Talos pulled the girl from the blazing home on Trenton Street after a fire broke out on the main floor around 5 a.m. Thursday.

The girl's father, mother and four other siblings were able to make it out, but she was trapped on the first floor.

Talos, who goes by the name of Lee, sprung into action and went into the burning home and pulled her out.

Talos said he was awakened by the screams of the family and when he looked out, he saw his neighbor's home on fire.

"I crossed the street and the owner Willie was in the back with his wife and some of his kids. I asked if everyone was out and he said, 'My daughter.' He was crying, so I asked, 'Where?'" Talos said.

Talos said he used a baseball bat to break out the window, but when he tried to enter the home he was overcome by fire, so he ran back to his home and got a blanket to put over his head. Once again, he tried entering the home but there was too much smoke.

He said he then ran back to his home and found a painting mask and entered the burning home through the side window.

"I crawled down. I knew the window was behind me. I found a leg. As soon as I reached her she made a little noise. I knew she was alive and it felt so good when I had her in my hands," said Talos.

Talos brought her to the window where the girl's father and neighbor Terrance Stonestreet performed CPR.

"She was not really moving but as I gave her CPR she responded. She made few little noises. She coughed up some black smoke," said Stonestreet.

CPR was given to the girl until the ambulance arrived.

She was taken to Children's Hospital and put on a ventilator, according to her family.

Doctors told the girl's family that at some point, her heart had stopped, but they were able to revive her. She remained on life support, but doctors confirmed that she had suffered brain damage.

The tight knit and diverse community prayed for the girl's recovery in the hours following the rescue.

"I hope to God she is OK," said Stonestreet, who said his daughters are the girl's playmates.

The family is from Yemen and has been living in the home for at least five years. The girl has been identified as Tahanne Shohatee.

When asked if Talos would go into a burning home to try and rescue someone again, he said yes because it was his job as a community member.

"You got to do something when you see that they are in a fire. It's a human being. You do something, you do it smart. I knew what I was doing," said Talos, who is from Romania.

Stonestreet said Talos was quick on his feet and acted like a true hero Thursday.

"I don't know where he got the smoke suit, but he pulled her out in less than five seconds," he said. "Lee is the real hero."

The girl's father was treated for minor injuries.

Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire. However, they said it does not appear to be suspicious.
