Tuesday April 7 2009, Berkeley County companies 30, (hedgesville)40 (Beddington) and
60 (Baker Heights) were alerted for a barn fire at the intersection of Rt. 11 and Mid-Atlantic Blvd. Units arrived on scene and set up for an exteiror attack. Once the operation was under way, three firefighters one from Beddington VFD and two from Baker Heights VFD proceeded to the sid eof the barn to assist with fire attack when a gust of wind blew parts of the roof to the ground along with a wooden bean. The three ff's started backing away but it was to late. The beam struc the three ff's knocking them to the ground. Two ff's were treated and released with minor injuries but the third ff was not so furtunate. the third ff is member of the Baker Heights VFD in Martinsburg Wv. He was ttransported to City Hospital in Martinsburg where they started treatment for his broken left and numerous facial breaks and severe swelling , the ff was being preped for transport when he coded, hospital staff did a great job bringing him back in a matter of minutes.
He was then transported to Fairfac INOVA in VA for his injuries.
Once at Fairfax, they discovered that he had inhailation burns through his nasel passage and then he was flown to a burn unit D.C. where he remains in stable but critical condiction.
The Baker Heights VFD and other departments are working together to assist his wife and youg son with anything they need. We are asking for everyone to keep him in thier prayers during his time of need.
This fire is being invetigated by the Wv Fire Marshals Office and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Dept. There have been about a dozen set fires in the past two months in Berkeley County WV where we have had several vacant houses and building burned.
