SPARTA, Wis. - A police standoff at a residence in western Wisconsin ended with a fire and a fatal shooting.

Monroe County investigators say a man concerned with the welfare of his despondent father asked police to escort him to his dad's house in the Town of Sparta Sunday afternoon. When the father refused to answer the door, officers tried entering, but took cover when a shot was fired. The standoff continued for about four hours.

Sheriff Pete Quirin says the man shot himself after setting a fire in the basement.

WKBT-TV says the State Patrol, Sparta police and La Crosse County sheriff's officials were also called to the scene.
