WILLIAMS, Ariz. - A wind-whipped wildfire in northern Arizona had charred an estimated 1,000 acres by Wednesday night with at least 10 residences evacuated as a precaution.

Kaibab National Forest officials said there were no reported injuries or structures lost to the Eagle Rock Fire burning 11 miles northeast of Williams.

The blaze was first spotted Wednesday morning and quickly grew from 30 acres to 200 acres by early afternoon and then 800 acres by late afternoon due to gusty winds, authorities said.

The windy weather grounded air tankers, but authorities said calmer weather was forecast Thursday and four air tankers, a helicopter and several water tenders were expected on the scene along with a hot shot crew.

Forest spokeswoman Punky Moore said there were about 50 homes in the area but she could only confirm that at least 10 had been evacuated. Earlier, national forest officials said 50 homes had been evacuated.

Moore said 250 firefighters were working through the night to battle the blaze, which was burning in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer.

Coconino County sheriff's deputies and volunteers went door-to-door to help evacuate as many as 50 residences in the Spring Valley area about 3 miles east of the fire. A shelter was set up by nightfall at the Main Consolidated School in nearby Parks.

It was not immediately clear how many people were displaced by the evacuations. Parks officials said an estimated 200 to 300 families and visitors are in Spring Valley at this time of year.
