As of 8 o'clock Sunday night the wildfire burning in eastern Pueblo County has grown to several hundred acres. Right now, seven fire fighting agencies are on scene battling strong winds. At one point, three firefighters had to abandon their trucks because the flames overtook their position and they were almost trapped by the fire. Those firefighters were able to escape harm but at least one responder has been hurt in this fight.
State Highway 167 remains closed at the junction of Highway 67 according to emergency dispatchers.
This started as a controlled burn that got out of hand. The fire is burning near Nepesta Road which is between State Highways 96 and U.S. 50 about six miles west of Fowler. In that area are ranches, and active railroad line and the Arkansas River. So far no one has been asked to evacuate and no structures have burned.
