Why does it seem like nobody cares?
I am currently helping my chief at a FF1 &2 class. He has twenty people in his class, and only a handful really care to be there. It seems like most of them are taking the class because their chief told them they had to take the class before they can do anything on calls.

I have noticed that trend from alot of young people out there it seems they don't care wheter it be in a FF I or II or what ever class or job they have, seem like its hard to get anyone to take pride in what they do anymore.

Yes, sometimes "youth" is a problem. It is however a problem that can be overcome. Sometimes you just have to find what "IT" is that motivates them. It is sad that the job, career, opportunity and fire itself does not do this.
Part of the problem is youth, part is generational. Some of our younger generations feel, as some have taught them that they are entitled to whatever they want...just because. I have seen it in volunteer organizations, paid organizations, entry level and promotionals. It is just a part of society as a whole that we are now having to deal with.
On the other hand I have met some "great" motivated kids that really want to do the job. WANT to work. WANT to learn. Sometimes it is those "diamonds", that make the rest of the "coal" worth dealing with.
Hang in there. There are good classes and bad. Sounds like you are due for a good one.

As an Instructor I've seen this issue more and more. When someone contacts me about enrolling in one of my courses, especially FF I & II I let them know up front the time table of the class. They are allowed to miss only 3 of the 22 sessions. Any missed sessions will have to be made up. All absences have to be reported to me ahead of time. Now that said I understand about emergencies, if someone in my class calls me after a session to tell me they or a family member was in the ER or something then okay. This information I go over with each person when they call expressing interest in the course, the first night of the course and in their copy of the class rules this is also included.
Even after all of that my last class started with 28 students, 23 went to the live burns and currently 20 are scheduled for state testing next month. Of those 23 only 11 showed up for the HazMat Ops class so the remaining will either have to find themselves a HazMat Ops class or wait till I can put another one. I don't understand either, 5 months in a classroom and then NOT to show up for the Operations class? Well they have 11 months to get it done and all testing.

WOW all that work and then blow off a HM ops class! tsk tsk tsk....Must have been an X-box convention or something that weekend...lol
