I've been reading a discussion on someone asking for advice in joining a department. Some of the posters have asked what the person's ultimate goal is, and why they want to join. It also came up that some departments have become more of a social club. So I put it to all of you, why did you join your respective fire departments and what do you think about these "social clubs?"
for me...I played baseball all the way through college...I got over missing the game but not the comradery...I found the same thing in the fire service...and we play some wiffile ball every now and then that makes up for missing the game!
I don't have as interesting a story as most. If someone my Senior year in High School had told me a year later I would be a FF; I would have laughed. I had had goals set and the fire service wasn't one of them. My kid brother had a couple Jr FF friends at school who talked him into joining. They could wear their uniforms to school and look big for the girls. Towards the end of my Freshman year in College; he started begging me to join. The fire department was in need of recruiting FF to drive the fire trucks and ambulance and to do the firefighting jobs the Jrs were not allowed to do. I told him if it would shut him up I would join after I finished taking my finals even though I knew nothing about firefighting.
I joined, made new friends, started training and making runs and the rest is history; Like they say it gets into your blood. I took every class I could and 3 years later when I moved and joined another Fire Dept. I was already an EMT and had more training then my officers had. I hated having to leave the Fire service after 16 years as a Volunteer. I wanted to make it at least 20yrs; more if my health permitted.
I had to quit though, when my ex walked out; Family comes first and I wasn't about to lose my baby girl because a dirty lawyer decided I was always at the fire department. Who knows maybe one day conditions will be right and I can return to the Fire/Rescue Service. I would like that.
Well that's unfortunate you had to leave the service Ed. Hopefully one day you'll be able to return to us. Great story till the end though! It gets into your blood!

Grandpa was on the fire dept for over 30 years, and had lots of friends dads on the dept and being a "tool loving, action enjoying, helping others" kind of guy it just fit. My neighbors son was like a big brother to me and when he joined of course I wanted to be like him and always enjoyed going to the fire dept with him, etc. Dad was the call guy for heavy equipment(dozers and such) at barn fires and what not and as i got older I was with him and we ran the machines in shifts, and I loved the scene...the job them guys get to do. So what better way to have fun, run equipment and do some wild fun things. My life pretty much is three things. Wife and daughter, job(which I love) and the fire service.
I joined because i wanted to help people. I am a volunteer and i have been going to the fire station since i was sixteen. There is going to be socializing going on, but everyone contributes, and the job gets done. We dont socially converse until the scene is clear because thats not what we're there for
Sounds like me, I'm the only one in my family to be a firefighter as well. Sometimes it's difficult because family and friends don't understand why we want to dedicate our lives to something like this. That's what I've found anyways. But good luck at your new department John!
