First off, I am not unhappy at all with the FFN. This site has proven to be very beneficial for firefighters all over the world. And this is the point of this discussion post.

Up until a few minutes ago, I was convinced that the FFN folks occasionally would post topics but never more than 50% of the total forum posts displayed on the FFN main page.

I understand the need for FFN to pay their bills and use Fire & Rescue magazine to place forum posts, using the F&R logo. But today, here's what I saw.

So my question here is whether this site, which is intended or use by current and former fire, rescue & ems professionals or, is it for FFN sponsors to control as we have seen today.

I'm not sure why the FFN team cannot restrict their overuse of forum posts spots, and there is only 10. Today, they took 9 out of the 10 available forum posts, pushing aside member initiated discussions and posts.

Would it not be more advantageous for the FFN news posts to be in a separate location from the FFN membership's discussion forum posts?

Anyone else have thought on this?

CBz, message me for some thoughts about this.
A separate place for them on the main page would be nice...

Not sure what the subject line is about -- this site is for the FFN membership.

The number of NEWS (not remotely sponsor-driven messages as suggested or anything specifically to do with the magazine...it's news) posts was all at once because we had someone out due to a family emergency and his backup had to post all the news at once due to a scheduling issue. That's about the only explanation and that was indeed pretty rare...so, while we understand your frustration....typically posts are spread out, or there's a few every hour at most depending on what is going on. News posts are typically five of the top 10 forum posts in terms of most read (not commented on or discussed).

Right now our best place to post news is in the forums, and the latest posts show up on the home page. That will change soon, but for now that's how it works. That's been that way for over a year, so 'pushing aside' isn't really any intent.

And we've also changed the homepage to display less forums, in an effort to drive more people to the full forums page which are becoming increasingly popular. The main forum page, category pages and latest post pages are driving more users into forum posts than ever -- so that is going to be our focus. As we grow, and expand beyond just the social/professional network more, we need to diversify what is on the home page. That may mean we test different methods of driving people to content. If you are really into the forums, we really encourage users to click the 'forums' tab...it gets you the latest forums the quickest -- and has more information including a teaser of the post, unlike the simple headline on the home page.

If we could post the news elsewhere easily, we would -- and will soon. But suggesting posting news is something about sponsor control really doesn't remotely tie into each other. Within 15 minutes of what you saw, as new people replied to other discussions, the top discussions on the home page changed.

Thanks

We're testing some changes to the home page. We can't guarantee there will always be the 10 latest posts on the home page. If you click the Forum tab, you'll always see the most recent 10 posts and can easily page through to view even more. It's really the easiest way to browse the forums and how forums are handled on most sites.

Thanks
