What's burning you? 

 

Who/what is making you mad?  How is it being handled?  

 

I teach Conflict Resolution and Employee Counseling each year for our Officer Development program and was hoping to hear what issues you are dealing with. 

 

I always have the issues that make it in the newspaper, but want more of the day to day issues that are affecting the crews.   Also, let us know if you want the group to offer suggestions.

From my perspective, it does appear that the volunteer world has a level of politics that far exceeds what I have to deal with. I imagine it stems from being a more social group.

I was reading one of the other blogs that asked if it was OK for an 18 or 19 y.o. to be Chief of a volunteer department. That just seems so crazy to me. I wouldn't even let him drive a vehicle let alone do much more than ride backwards.

I would encourage you to keep plugging along. Your passion will make your department a better place.

Let me end by saying thanks for what you do. I honestly think that our Volunteer Firefighters are under appreciated.

While I tend to agree with your assessment of an 18 or 19 year old individual being fit to serve as Chief, the reality is that in this day and age, with a real lack of willing volunteers, a 19 y/o Chief may be their only option. I sincerely hope not, but we never know.

And as I've said many times: I volunteer because I would rather do this job for free, than not at all.
