A couple years ago or department purchased SaberJet Nozzels for all of our trucks. They were supposed to be "the best nozzles out there". Most every person on the department seems to like them but I personally don't like them at all. I just wanted to see what everyone else's opinions were on them and what you think the best nozzels is.
ITS ALL ABOUT GPM AND "HEAVY" WATER SMOOTH BORE NOZZLES THROW A TIGHTER STREAM THE WATER DOES NOT BREAK UP AS FAST. GOOD INFO CAN BE FOUND AT FIRE ENGINEERING'S WEB SITE SEARCH ARTICLES BY ANDY FREDRICKS
when I was coming up through the fire service I only knew of combination nozziles. Once I got hired at my current job it was smooth bores only (7/8 tip on 1 3/4 attack lines) and I thought back to what had been drilled into my head. "What about the protection of my fog stream when it gets bad?" Well what I've come to find out from some pretty rough compartmentized fires is that gpm without droplets puts the fire out quick. If I had ever put my nozzle to fog like I had been taught when it got really hot I would be part lobster on a plate in a Maine resturant. When you need to cool your enviornment down and you have a smooth bore you Z the ceiling which makes large droplets, not much steam. None of our guys come out taking their packs and coats off doing the steaming dance ya know.
Never had that chance to use the SaberJet Nozzle. However we aren't shy when it comes to Akron. Engine 1 has the TurboJet Nozzles. Tanker 5 has TFT Automatic. Ladder 6 has an older Akron with no handle, not really fond of them. Mini 4 has Akron as well. I really can't give an opinion between the two, other then the Akrons are adjustable in the GPM at the nozzle and the TFT aren't. We do have one smooth bore in service but I haven't had the chance at using it yet. We also have an adjustable nozzle that can be used on our deck gun and it's TFT. However the deck gun is an Akron with the stacked tips on right now and if I have my way it will stay that way until we need the adjustable on it.
