Weekend-long Los Angeles Scrap Yard Fire Extinguished

LOS ANGELES - Fire fighters have extinguished a stubborn blaze in a Los Angeles salvage yard that burned for more than 36 hours.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Erik Scott says crews used bulldozers Sunday to plow through burning tires and scrap metal, sending up a plume of acrid black smoke in the Wilmington area near the Port of Los Angeles.

The smell of burnt rubber and metal could be detected as far away as Carson, ten miles to the north. Health officials said the smoke was not hazardous.

Scott says one civilian and one firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries in the blaze.

At its peak, the fire was said to be as long as a football field and 20 to 25 feet high.
