Hey guys....looking for some help.  I have recently been appointed the new Website Administrator, and although we currently have a website, it is outdated and i thought it would be nice to 'spruce' it up a little bit and change it some.  Im looking for any ideas as far as some good fire related graphics, clip art, anything like that i would be able to use on the website....also some ideas for maybe an html program for help, since im not very familiar with html code, it has been awhile...  i have been given permission to switch to a different domain host, however i would like to try to save some money for the department first by just trying it out with what we currently have.

so any suggestions on good sites for fire related pictures, clip art, anything like that, or even layouts, would be greatly appreciated!!

as always, stay safe brothers & sisters!

As a webmaster / graphic artist who's been ding this stuff since macs looked like boxes and printers used paper with tiny holes on the side for the track feeder, there is one very important thing that you must learn to always do, especially when it comes time to learning, reading and writing HTML code... You must pay attention to detail!

Things like forgetting to change the forums discussion topic from General Firefighting and Rescue to a more appropriate category... That and make sure you purchase the Microsoft Web Development program. Kiss off using Dream Weaver. The learning curve is too steep. Once you purchase the basic msoft program, you will see three screen options.

1. WYSIWYG - What you see is what you get or wizzywag...
2. HTML code
3. Online view

Why is this good? The first option enables you to either create your own from scratch or simply modify what you have already done. The second or HTML script is pretty sweet because starting out with a blank screen enables you to pirate any website you like.

How? Click on your website to enable clicking VIEW SOURCE. Do a select all, copy and paste the source code on the middle HTML view tag, then back to the WYSIWYG view. Here, just like any word document you have used in the past, you can move photos around or change text.

As far as graphics, it a waste of time for anyone to send you graphics. It's kind of like letting someone else you don't know order dinner for you. Your vision is just that yours. Either research other fire department web sites, cutting and pasting what you like or... Become VERY familiar with Google Images, http://www.google.com/imghp, select images and bookmark the address. You are only limited by your own imagination.

Now getting your created webpages online is a whole different learning curve, but actually quite simple. Look up FTP Explorer and download a freeware version. None of this should cost you or anyone else a dime. This is how you access your server to manage your account, e.g.uploading your web pages and graphics. Just remember to keep all of your stuff in one folder online so when a computer reads the HTML text, it will easily find the graphics. I'm hoping you understand that when you save a web document, it must have htm or html at the end.

As I write this, so many things need to be understood, so don't feel confused. It's confusing at first. Here's another way to explain this by breaking down a web address.

www.silcom.com

The above is the provider.

www.silcom.com/~pordecon

A forward slash follows the provider with the account name which in this case is my account folder which is named ~pordecon

www.silcom.com/~pordecon/busy.htm

The created webpages, saved with the .htm at the end is the webpages I created using the msoft program. Any graphics or photos are simply transferred from your computer to the server using FTP protocol language and programming. Easy money, right?

Does that answer your question?

Hi NWFD22, I have been doing marketing, web and design for about 16 years now and I would highly recommend using a Content Management System for anyone that wants to update their own site. It is much more cost effective and can be updated by anyone that has the password and does't require html after the site is set up. Good examples are Drupal and Joomla sites.
Oh fine, go ahead and trump me with the fact that you have been doing this professionally for 16 years and know more than I do... So, with that said, I humbly ask, what is Drupal and Joomia? I'm ready to learn something new!

Silly Silly lol. Drupal and Joomla are content management sites, they are a bit of set up but they are module based so you can add many things a good example is this site, it allows for multiple logins, an administrator and galleries and even a shopping cart if required. I like them because once set up they are easier to update as they use a wysiwyg text editor and not everyone knows Html or all the bells and whistles of other types of languages.
Thanks both of you for your help and recommendations! Sounds like I have 2 people I can come to with any questions I have, to at least get started! Thanks and I appreciate it.
