WASHINGTON DC (
WUSA) - An elderly woman died after a late night fire inside a senior residence high-rise in Southwest Washington
Firefighters received a call shortly before 11:30 Monday night for a fire at the Greenleaf Senior Residence, which is at 1200 Delaware Avenue SW. Pete Piringer, spokesman for the DC Fire & EMS Department, said the call came from a fifth-floor apartment. When firefighters arrived, they found the fire was actually on the fourth floor. When they entered an apartment, they quickly found an elderly woman inside. Firefighters took her to an EMS unit on the scene and transported her to the local MedStar burn unit. She was taken there in critical condition and later died. Her name has not been released.
Firefighters got the fire under control quickly with a few minor evacuations within the building. No one else was hurt. The fire went to two alarms, with about 75-80 firefighters responding to the scene.
Investigators are trying to determine what started the fire. "It appears to have started in the living room area, in or around a couch possibly," Piringer told 9NEWS NOW.
