WASHINGTON, DC - A family is sorting through belongings and memories, after a devastating fire that killed a mother and daughter.

The two and a half story home burned Saturday night along the 1600 block of W Street in Southeast.

85-year-old Ruby Harris was bed-ridden. She and her 59 -year-old daughter both died from smoke inhalation.

Ruby's granddaughter, Angie Bodie, is a firefighter. She is thanking her colleagues for lending a helping hand.

"I think if my grandma was alive, she'd be really overcome with the generosity," Bodie said.

Pete Piringer with DC Fire and EMS, says there were no working smoke detectors. He says firefighters are planning to visit neighbors homes this Saturday and install detectors for those that need them.
