WALL-E Movie threat to the fire service? Or am I just an overzealous dad?

I sat and watched the new Disney/Pixar movie WALL-E today with my sons. There wasn't a lot else to do on a snow day. But now to my point, has any one else that has seen this movie disturbed about the lighter scene between WALL-E and EVE that takes place about 30 minutes into the movie.

The scene shows Wall-E and EVE playing with a "ZIPPO" lighter then of all things dropping it. In a day and age where we have fought to have lighters made safe from child tampering, and we all spend time teaching fire prevention to kids, the last thing we need is for Disney/Pixar to send children the wrong message that playing with a "Zippo" lighter is OK or fun to play with.

If you agree you can let Pixar know of your concerns by e-mailing them at publicity@pixar.com .
I know I am going to.

I haven't seen the movie, and am not likely to. As you describe the scene it seems to be totally inappropriate. Tell Pixar? Too late - the movie is already out there, nothing they can do about it now. Perhaps they'd have more regard for safety issues in the future, perhaps not.
Perhaps you should add the U.S.F.A.'s course on juvenile firesetters to you amazing list of courses, before you think that the problems of kids doing as they see done with lighters is overreacting. Here are just some of the facts, From the Burn Institute http://www.burninstitute.org/fbp/programs/juvenile.html

Nearly 85-percent of the victims of child-set fires are the children themselves.

Nationally, playing with fire is the leading cause of death in residential fires for young children.

At home, children often play with fire in the bedroom – where lots of things catch on fire easily.

Older children frequently play with fire outside the home, at the bus stop, or in vacant lots.

Children are under the false impression that they can control the fires they set.

Many children who set fires lack both parental supervision and fire safety education.

Juveniles account for more than 50-percent of all arson arrests in the United States.

Nationally, children who play with fire cause nearly 80,000 structure fires per year which result in approximately 760 deaths and more than 3,500 injuries.

Juvenile fire setting does an estimated 1.2 Billion dollars in damage annually.

It only takes about two-minutes for the flame from a single match to set an entire room on fire, and less than five minutes for that fire to overtake an entire house.
well yeah i have seen the movie and i do agree. we had a 2nd alarm fire a week ago because kids were playing with lighters and set the house on fire.. now they dont have a house.. so your right disney movies shouldnt be doing that. kids learn from stuff they watch..
i cant believe they let something like that through... prolly somehow trying to communicate the dangers of smoking.
You are right Tommy, kids do learn from their parents. But at the same time, they also learn by what they watch. Toddlers learn from developmental programs from a young age. As they get older, the learning and examples they see are still sticking with them. Especially from a Disney/Pixar movie. In their eyes those movies are the secong coming of Christ.
yeah that is deff true.... Parents should teach their kids right and wrong..
I’ve seen this movie a few times with my kids and that scene did catch my attention as a WTF.
That scene had no point what so ever and could have be left out of the movie period.
As far as parents watching there kids teaching them right from wrong. Not happening any more. Big screen HDTV’s have been hired to watch our kids and when they learn the wrong things from TV we criticize the networks demanding they cancel the show. Remember Bevis & But head and what happened there?
Need we say more?
I haven't seen the movie as of yet. I do the fire prevention in my department and as much as I can understand that you are concerned, please give kids a little more credit. If as parents and if you are a firefighter and you go to the schools and teach the kids about fire and how unsafe it is, you shouldn't have to worry. If you are that concerned then you should ask your kids and then discuss it with them. Ask them if they think it was good for Wall-E and EVE to play with the lighter. Then you can go from there on whether you need to go further. We are the parents and it is up to us to make sure that our kids know right from wrong and that they understand what is real and what is pretend. So I guess I am saying that maybe yeah you are being a little overzealous and before you even ask I have 3 children. Just my opinion. Stay Safe
Better yet - if you have young kids, don't have lighters or matches around the house. Keep these things locked up at the very least. Out of sight, out of mind.
thank you that is my point on what you both said.
Tommy, thanks. Glad there are people out there that get it...
Kids should be taught what is right and what is wrong by their parents. My parents did a bloody good job with me, I tried to do just as good a job with my sons. I was taught not to play with matches, as were my kids. I also taught my sons how to handle a firearm and how to shoot while they were still very young.

So we can agree that all good parents should and probably will teach their children.. Does that cover all parents? I know damn well it doesn't cover all parents here in Australia and I'm on a pretty safe bet that it doesn't cover all parents anywhere! There are too many parents who don't see the need, who will say that it's up to schools to teach, or they simply don't care. Parents who don't care, or have totally screwed up minds? Did anyone see where a young couple here allowed their young child to get hold of and swallow an Ecstasy pill? Allowed. The child is 2.5 months old - at that age they can't pick up anything as small as an E and haven't the coordination to get it into their mouth. Allowed? Garbage.

So. What about the kids whose parents aren't what we would want. Who is going to teach them about the correct way to handle a Zippo or matches? Probably something they see on TV or the big screen.
