Around 1900 this evening (1-21-09) a person was murdered on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The murder occured at the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown near the downtown Blacksburg area of campus. As of 2037, VTPD advised that they have a suspect in custody. Please keep the members of Virginia Tech Rescue Squad and Blacksburg Rescue in your thoughts and prayers. Many of the members of VTRS and Blacksburg Rescue on scene tonight were there on April 16, 2007 when a gunman killed 32 then himself on campus. I will post more as I find things out.
Virginia Tech Police Chief, Chief Flinchum and the Virginia Tech Spokesman Larry Hincker just released an update. They say that a female Asian international student was stabbed to death by a male Asian international student. Investigators say the pair knew each other, and the young woman lived at the Graduate Life center. Hincker says the school is trying to notify the family, but it is difficult because they are out of the country.
Chief Flinchum says Tech Police received the call about the stabbing a little after 7:00 p.m. When officers arrived, the woman was already dead. Flinchum advised the young man who they arrested was there when they arrived. Flinchum also says the young man has not been charged, but is being held in police custody. He has called the case a murder investigation.
A Virginia Tech news release has just been put out by Larry Hincker. Hincker says the original 911 call that Virginia Tech Police received, came in at 7:06 p.m. The call claimed a woman was being assaulted in the Au Bon Pain cafe at the Graduate Life center at Donaldson-Brown. Officers then arrived at 7:10 p.m., found the male international student suspect, and took him into custody. Investigators found a knife at the scene, that they believe to be the murder weapon. Officers are interviewing witnesses.
