Virginia Firefighters Forced To Bail Out During Search At House Fire

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A Portsmouth man has died in a fire in which firefighters trying to rescue him were forced to jump out of the windows of his home.

Capt. Paul Hoyle, a fire department spokesman, says crews had gone inside to rescue the man and made contact with him when the room they were in erupted in flames.

Hoyle says the man died in the fire, which was reported at 11:30 p.m. Thursday. The victim's name wasn't immediately released. The man's wife and son were taken to Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center for treatment.

The cause of the fire, which destroyed the home, remains under investigation.
