Virginia Firefighters Battle Three-Alarm Townhouse Fire

WUSA9

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (WUSA) - Three town homes have been damaged by a 3-alarm fire in Woodbridge.

Rebecca Barnes, spokeswoman for the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, says the O.W.L VFD received a report of a townhouse fire in the 2200 block of Mersey Side Drive around 6:16 Tuesday night. Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and discovered heavy smoke billowing from a row of four townhouses. Barnes says one of the firefighters checked behind the homes where he found the blaze had engulfed the exterior wall of the end unit and portions of the connecting townhouse.

According to Barnes, residents told the first firefighters to arrive at the scene all occupants had made it out of the homes safely.

The size of the blaze forced firefighters at the scene to call for a second alarm. Just two minutes later, the Battalion Chief requested a third alarm after assessing the high winds and the fire conditions.

Barnes says fire crews made an attempt to attack the flames inside two townhouses, but were forced back by intense heat and falling ceilings. After firefighters extinguished the blaze on the outside of the homes they attempted to make another interior attack. The fire crews were driven back a second time when they were faced with wind-driven flames that spread faster than the water streams could douse them.

Fire crews mounted a defensive attack using ladder trucks and high volume nozzles mounted to the top of the fire engines. The blaze was eventually brought under control within 45 minutes and Barnes says most of the damage was contained to the original two townhouses. The flames caused minor damage to a third townhouse in the attic area.

No civilians were injured and firefighters were able to rescue two dogs.

According to Barnes, one firefighter was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation and released.

Barnes says firefighters responded from as far away as Manassas. The fire departments from Dale City, Dumfries Triangle, Manassas, Coles and Quantico were also on the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
