LYNCHBURG, Va. - A bridge on U.S. 460 in Lynchburg has been named in honor of a volunteer firefighter who died while trying to rescue motorists stranded by floodwaters.

Carter Martin was assistant chief for the Brookville-Timberlake Volunteer Department when he was swept off the bridge on June 22, 1985 after the Timber Lake dam burst during a heavy storm.

Firefighters and community members attended a dedication ceremony Tuesday as the Virginia Department of Transportation renamed the bridge in honor of Martin.
