I recently took my test to become a city Firefighter. However, you must reside in the city at the time of applying. Sad enough to say there are alot of people out there who live in the surrounding area's and NOT the city and used false addresses to take the test. It is a high demand job here and is offered to the public, as long as you are a city resident. I think that it is ashame that others who are not city residents, may score higher on the test and be placed higher to hire than the actual residents of the city. It takes jobs away from us who chose to live here for that reason. It is problem everytime that they hire and I feel it's not fair. I was wondering how you all feel and what you would do if you knew people who actually submitted a false address? Thanks everyone

Not a good way to start out by lying. Rules are there for a reason. If they can't follow the rules now what will they do in the future. Residency requirements suck but that's the rule. We don't always get the best people for the job when the candidate pool is narrowed. Let someone know now before it is too late.
It is their tax dollars that are paying the salaries and they prefer to give preference to their citizens....it isn't all that uncommon....if you lie on the application what does that say about the persons character...?? Would you trust him...?? I wouldn't.....Paul
Do they require you show proof of residency via your drivers license or a piece of mail? If it is your license, then whatever address they have on record for the DMV is their official address, regardless if they sleep there or not.

If they just ask you to list an address on an application then the department isn't too worried about the requirement. I myself want to hire the best guy for the job. If he or she is better than you then I want him.

This is exactly why, many fire department's are going to madatory requirement for residency at the completion of probation period. Many are making you sign the conditions of hire letter and they can terminate you for not completing the terms of agreement.
