Underground root fires

We are fighting a large fire right now at Mombacho Volcano in Nicaragua and underground fires have started. Does anyone have any suggestions to battle this?

Update: 600 manzanas (1,056 acres) have now burned. It has been 10 days and it is now under ground in the roots and rocks. I have seen the monkeys crying and holding their young up high in the branches of the trees and the smoke has caused some of them to fall into the fire. The wildlife in the area is suffering tremendously.

Any assistance would be very appreciated. We have a lagoon and Lake Nicaragua a few kms from the site - an air intervention would really help.The media has not given this the importance that it should.

Dig trenches to isolate and attempt to contain the spread. Soak the surface of the isolated area, the added moisture may or may not increase steam output and in essence convert and self extinguish. Its theory and if it doesn't work then oh well, that's one new thing you have learned not to do.

I.C.S. dictates establishing objectives and meeting these objectives in a timely and safe manner. If the objective can't be meant then its back to the drawing board. I hope for a good ending to this incident, stay safe out there.
