INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis authorities say 24 children and four adults at a day care center escaped injury when a fire broke out in the building.

Firefighters say heavy smoke enveloped the center when they arrived about 2:40 p.m. Monday. The fire took about half an hour to control.

Officials say the staff of Regina's Child Care Ministry reported hearing a popping sound and were able to move the children safely to the Cumberland branch post office next door.

The children range in age from 6 months to 9 years old.

Battalion Chief Shawn Grass tells WISH-TV the blaze did about $100,000 in damage to the building. It may have smoldered for some time before being discovered and may have been caused by an electrical problem.
