ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Two people died and five others were taken to a hospital after a fire at a northwest Missouri retirement home.

Firefighters rescued several others Sunday evening at the Danford Hall Apartments in St. Joseph, which had more than 40 residents in 38 apartments.

Jim Connors, St. Joseph police commander, says the five people's injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to minor burns.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports that the fire began in the southeast section of the second floor and spread down the hallway.
