MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis Fire Department officials say a 2-year-old child has died after a house fire believed to have started by a space heater placed too close to combustible items.

Memphis Fire Battalion Chief Keith Staples said in a statement that firefighters found the little girl in the living room of a home that caught fire at about 7:24 a.m. CDT Sunday.

Staples said the child died before firefighters got to the scene. The name of the victim has not been released pending positive identification and next of kin notification.

The cause of death remained unknown.

One adult was taken to The Regional Medical Center at Memphis Burn Unit with cuts to a hand. Staples said the fire remained under investigation, but a space heater appeared to be the cause.
