Remember watching, Leave it to Beaver, The Brady Bunch, Gilligan's Island, Bugs Bunny, The Superheros, Eight is Enough, The Dukes of Hazard? Today kids are watching Sponge Bob, ICarly, Jimmy Neutron, CSI (Miami, Denver, Chicago, LA, MInnesota, Kansas City, and who knows what other names they call it), Heroes. Do you think that they act out according to the shows? If they were to watch only the shows from the older generation, would they act the same or be different. These old shows, I think, taught me to be kind and treat others with respect. I'm sure shows like ICarly does this also, however I feel it's not enough. Sure parents have the most influence, but our younger parents today didn't see those old shows. Just wondering if they did a study on kids for one year to see if this hypothesis would prove true or not. One group of kids could only watch the old shows and the other group could only watch todays. Would each group act different? What are your thoughts?

BBB LOL. That was hilarious.
Good discussions....I loved Jason buckin hay for .25 a bundle....OUTSTANDING....My first job was when I was 10...cleaning out my grandfathers service station....my second was cleaning off my uncles roofing trucks. I was glad to have a job that would pay me. Of course i was not from the generation that gets "allowance" for doing no jobs at all. Im horrified by the number of kids that I talk to who have parents that give them money based on the fact that they want it....WOW, don't teach your kids responsibility or anything!!!
1. I am joining up, in 4 more years after college
2. What does me being a junior for 1 year have to do with anything pertaining to the understanding of the human mind and development.
3. To think that one learns the art of killing from a video game is simply hilarious. I just beat Halo, now I can go save the planet from aliens.
Can you learn how to fight a fire from a game like this:

Not really, its a fun dab in the experience, but it does not come close to teaching you how to properly make entry to a fire, correct attack or anything else.
Much like that a video game does not teach you how to take over a school, or what have you.
4. video games in no way are accurate and can in no way train one to kill

So what skills could you use a video to improve and learn how to kill, enlighten and educate me please!
Also I would like you to critique my grammar. I try very hard to use proper grammar and I think most of the time I get it right. I know my English teacher doesn't complain too much, save a few comma splices.
I also stand by my point that it is ignorant to say that you can learn how to kill from a video game.
Do yourself a favor and take some psychology when you attend college.
I did.
You might not think it's so ignorant.
It almost sounds redundant; you going to college.
Obviously, you know everything already.
You're a real prodigy.
You beat Halo.
I had a successful career on a fire department.
I'll pick ME.
Good luck.

Now, THAT is ignorant.
Grammar? Where did that come from? Yes; you have good grammar. Now; use it in a respectful manner.
To my friends here at the Nation, I am vastly out gunned.
I was taken down by a junior.
I will sentence myself to a life sentence of "Guitar Hero".
And I will stop following this discussion now that Brian has proven his superior intellect.
Toodles.
I sure am glad we have Brian here to save us, and the world now that he has beaten HALO. It sounds as if you can maybe run intellectual circles around all your 17 year old friends...but a junior is still a junior in here junior!
What does me being a junior have to do with a basic understanding that a video game cannot teach you the skills of how to kill a fellow human being?
No one has answered my question either, how does a video game teach you how to kill someone? That statement was made with out any support.
I never said I knew anything, nor did I even act like it. I am just offended when you all like to but a face on teens from this generation like we are that different from the rest. Every generation seems to rebel against their parents, have songs, tv shows, and movies that influence them.
While I did come off as very abrasive I have just become fed up with the video games cause violence argument. It must be more than just that. While I may not know the ins and outs of fire fighting I have studied topics like columbine, and gun violence among teens. While I am 17, do you know what my education has been like? No I do not know everything, but I do know enough to argue the point that I am making.

Jake, I also beat the fire fighter game, so I can go put out a fire, then I beat Grand Theft Auto so I can go on a killing spree, car jack loads of people then evade the police. See how playing video games is rather inconceivable, neither of those games could teach me what I need to know to be proficient at either.

I also noticed a comment about kids seeing Fast and Furious then going out and trying some speeding or other reckless moves. I am not gonna lie, it does. I saw it the other day and I wished I had that Buick Grand National or Ford Torino *sp?*. What someone does after seeing hte movie comes down to how disciplined they are, how they were raised, and how well they have been taught to respect the hulk of metal they pilot around.

Now I am sorry I came of as rather arrogant and abrasive but I know all of you were in my shoes once. In a position where all you heard were the bad things about your generation. When ever I see my cadets, or the teens at the church youth group I also help lead, it is a shining ray of hope that there is good left out there
I think you have a great observation. This TV generation has been taught to be "victims" not "agents". It has made a real mess for many of them. That is why the youth wilderness programs happen in the woods and teach them to be a search and rescue team. Parents are dropping the ball too often. Teaching values and character have been overlooked and rushed. This is just my view and doesn't apply to all youth and parents.

There is an article about Columbine I think is very topical to this discussion
The old Super Nintendo with a game that has pop-up targets and an M-16 wired to the system. It's kind of like duck hunt with an assault rifle. I can't remember the military name they gave that system though.
I think we should all gather around my living room and watch Family Matters and Full House.... maybe Saved by The Bell. But, I dont know if we will have enough time
