Three Hurt, Dozens Displaced After Washington, D.C. Apartment Fire

WASHINGTON - Authorities say a two-alarm fire at a Capitol Hill apartment building has injured at least three women and displaced dozens of residents.

Officials say the fire broke out about 8 p.m. Thursday at the high-rise apartment building in the 1200 block of G Street. D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says firefighters found heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the third floor.

Firefighters rescued about six people and helped many others out of the building.

At least three women suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to a hospital, including a 79-year-old victim who was in critical condition. A firefighter also received minor injuries to his hand.

Officials say 40 to 50 people have been displaced by the fire.
