NEW HAVEN, Conn. - New Haven's fire chief says three people have died in an overnight house fire and that eight others were injured, including some who jumped from second-floor windows to escape.
Chief Michael Grant says the fire was reported just before 2 a.m. Wednesday at the multi-family home in the city's Fair Haven section. Arson investigators from the Connecticut State Fire Marshal's Office joined city firefighters later Wednesday morning at the scene, though the fire's cause remained undetermined.
Grant says a preliminary investigation shows the fire started in the second-floor stairwell and spread to the third floor, where the three victims were found.
Grant says the eight people hospitalized include four who jumped from windows. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The victims' names were not immediately released.
