BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Fire officials in Birmingham say three people died in an early morning apartment fire, and the blaze is being investigated as a possible homicide.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis says there was a little smoke showing when firefighters arrived early Friday morning at the building on 44th Street North.

Mardis says a 34-year-old man and his mother, whose age hasn't been determined were pronounced dead at the scene. He says a 12-year-old girl was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

He says fire and homicide investigators are on the scene.
