I'm taking the new fire officer I coarse, wow what a headache. I've got to take 4 pre coarse's (NIMS, ISO, Ed. Meth and FF Strategies and tactics) before I'm aloud to take the actual "fire officer I" class. Is anyone else taking these or has takin the new coarse and why do we have to take these pre-coarses, when there going to be explained again in the "fire officer I" class? Is it so they can get more money or what?

No, it is so they can build and expand on these principles and ideas learned in those classes,There is not likely time to instruct those areas and cover new material in the same class. But also because they want more money! LOL
No, it is because in the Fire Officer I course you will need to know things that are in the other classes listed. I have never heard of having to have the Educational Methodology class before Fire Officer I. You are usually asked to take that class if you are going to TEACH fire science but there may also be a reason for that as well.
By requiring the pre-requsite courses everyone should be at the same level or @ least on the same page.

What school are you taking the course from?
40 hours of Educational Methodology is a pre-requitesite for the NFPA Pro-Board Fire Officer 1 Certification.
Company Officer's provide company training hence the requirement for Ed Meth. As well as being Pro-Board FF-2 and NIMS. You are not going to repeat those pre-req classes during your CO class, if you did it wouldn't be a CO Class. Besides if you didn't have them you would be lost when it came time to formulate IAP's or manage an incident.

Best of Luck, they only get harder as they go along... I have completed Fire Officer-I, II, and III.
We've got instructors from Baker College and we're hosting the class at a local fire department.
Your right on Fetc, plus you need 3 yrs. in the fire service before taking thi class. I almost had the old fire officer completed, I missed one class. So here I am taking it all over again. Your Fire Officer I, II and III, is this the old or the new coarse?
Hey T.J.,

Good to see a fellow Michigan FF. I completed the Company Officer I & II course earlier this year. I had to complete the NIMS-ICS, Ed Meth, & ISO courses as well as the MCTO-Decision Making, STICO & PICO courses as prerequisites.

The prerequisites were the old Fire Officer I & II. They dealt mainly with incident operations, except for the Ed Meth. The new Company Officer I & II covers more of the day-to-day issues that arise for company officers around the station in dealing not only with crews, but with the public. The prerequisites are not necessarily explained again.

While before I thought it was going to be a pain in the butt, as compared to the old system, I would recommend it to everyone. I can see the difference between those who were certified under the old system and the new. That's not to say that those who certified under the old system are bad officers, since many had good mentors who taught them the day-to-day operations. I've just seen several officers who passed a written and oral exam, had the old certification, got the job and didn't have any direction on the day-to-day station operations.

Let me know how it goes.

Good luck and stay safe.
Chris
I've had all the classes but the Ed Meth. hummmm guess I should finish what I start, not wait 3 yrs huh?
Thanks a lot Chris.
