Stress and Overexertion is the NUMBER 1 Killer of Firefighters Annually.

So I want to know how many firefighters here on Firefighter Nation are required by your Fire Department to pass an ANNUAL NFPA 1582 Physical?

So here is the deal FFN, press reply and just type YES or NO.

Yes, also have PT 1 hour per shift and run 1.5 miles a week
Aye
The answer to your headline question is "Yes". LODDs are down to around 25% of the norm so far this year with a couple of weeks to go.

The answer to your embedded question is also "yes".

However, simple yes/no answer doesn't tell the whole story. Many of the stress-related LODDs over the past few years have been firefighters who had passed their most recent NFPA 1582 physical. Some of them were extremely fit athletes.

When it comes to heat stress, dehydration and blood thickening, and cyanide exposure, just being fit isn't a guarantee of surviving your next heat stress event or toxic exposure event.
yes
I agree Ben, but there are still many LODD's that occur before a firefighter ever arrives on scene, or post emergency response without ever induring any physical stress or overexertion except for the stress incurred from the tone itself.

I am in agreement that dehydration, physical stress and overexertion, or exposure to toxic chemicals are a serious concern even for the healthy, but those conditions are subject to control by progressive and safety minded incident commanders.
YES, and on duty fitness is not mandatory but recommended.
No.
