NORTH BAY SHORE, N.Y. - Police on Long Island are investigating a fire that killed a 17-year-old boy and critically injured his 16-year-old sister.

Suffolk County police say they responded to the fire on Spur Drive North in North Bay Shore at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Smoke and fire was rising from the rear of the house. Neighbors told firefighters that the house was occupied.

Firefighters found Luis Zayas and Angela Alvarez unconscious in a ground floor bathroom. They were taken to a hospital where Zayas was pronounced dead.

Alvarez was listed in critical condition suffering from smoke inhalation and burns.

Authorities say the children's mother, Zulma Zayas, escaped uninjured through a bedroom window.
