Nothing that we say about the Tennesee incident is going to fix the problems in Obion County. That is a mess for the county policticans to resolve or potentially not. The fact of the matter is it is consuming the FFN website, and that is ridiculous.
Lets go back to "Hey what color is your fire truck", "explorers responding", or "leaving school" or "who is allowed to run lights and sirens in a POV".
Because nothing we say to eachother is going to correct any of the problems down there. This is just drawing a line amongst brother and sisters.

I was an explorer at the age of 21...
And I know nothing about the bylaws but I can say that some of the best firefighters I meet were explorers who ran calls as minors. it gave them confidence and knowledge

There is a true BSA Fire Explorer program with bylaws and then there is a self made junior program that some department's create their own rules and what kids are allowed to do.
Ours follows the BSA bylaws, and insurance and it says they are not part of an emergency response. It is a learning program.

If where you are has an explorer/junior/cadet program and many/most of the members in your department (and area departments) at one time were part of it, then your statement makes a lot of sense.

The Learning for Life (BSA Explorers) do allow a person to be an Explorer up to the age of 21.
The rules DO allow for Explorers to run on calls, but they must be belted etc, but they are NOT to participate in fireground activities. They are observe only.

yes but my point is for a Firefighter to not want explorers (or juniors or cadets or what the American scouts call their group) to not respond and gain experience for whatever reason means they have a bad program and maybe should look into fixing it.

Not at all Stephanie. Not allowing people to respond does not constitute a bad program, but that they don't want to take chances of having a civilian injured. There are also issues like pt privacy and HIPPA that depts may not feel comfortable with by having civilians do ride alongs.
The job etc can be adequately shown with training, meetings and so forth. The whole purpose of such programs is to give a taste of what it is like to do the job, to help people determine if this would be a career choice they would want to do. The purpose of such programs is NOT to be a training ground, but to show aspects of the job that one may not see to make such a choice to pursue the profession or not.

You make good points but if you trust these young men and young women to train with you and represent your department as members then you should be able to trust them on calls also. And if you dont trust them, then you have not trained them very well. Thats just my opinion tho!

SHOULD BE ABLE TO TRUST... is a luxury
Commitment is variable...
Trust is a character issue
Trust is a skill issue
Training and comraderie will get you only so far.
