Staying in the game
This is my first discussion topic so bare with me if I do not get it right, the first time. When I say staying in the game I mean staying curent. I have worked with at least 3 differant departments, 2 are vol. and one was paid. rght now I am the new guy at my station. I am certified so that is a good thing however I have been in public safty for 15 years and when going from one dept. to the next it was kinda of hard. the terminolgy is not always the same. Some dept. seem to be behind the times while other dept. seem so advanced. so for new fire fighters I believe that it is important for you to read everything you can get your hands on and ask as many questiond as you can, for another firefighters life may just depend on you knowing what to do and it might have been that question you were going to ask but you thought that it sounded dumb. There is no dumb questions. Does anyone else have any input.

I transerred to my present Brigade from another in the same Fire Service. The training is identical (State controlled) but there were minor differences in application. Plus each Brigade has it's own SOP's under those of the FRS as a whole. So yes, I agree with you. When you change to a new 'department' then you must expect some differences. You come in with knowledge, but your new friends may be suspicious of it! You must find out how things are done, how you must now do them (unless there's a glaring safety issue of course!). If after a period you think that your 'old' ways are better, then you can attempt to have those ways adopted. But if you come out and say "I've always done it this way, you lot are wrong" don't expect a good reaction!

Lucky for our department our Chief is a big advocate for continuing education. They even go as far as to have us do ride alongs with other agencies to see how they operate.
