ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Paul fire officials say a student at the University of St. Thomas has died after smoke and flames filled his home as he slept.
Fire Chief Steve Zaccard says three others survived by jumping from a second-story window. He says they were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
Firefighters responded to the burning home Saturday about 3:15 a.m. and found the three survivors standing outside. The victim was declared dead at the scene.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune says the victim was a 20-year-old sophomore. His name hasn't been released pending notification of family members.
Zaccard says it's not clear how the fire started but preliminary indications suggest it started on the porch.
A prayer service was to be held Saturday evening on campus.
