Smoke/Fog Machine Suggestions?
Does anyone have any good suggestions for a quality smoke/fog machine to use for training? I have seen some for fire departments but these cost over $1,000. My department has a smoke trailer that we use for training, but we use hay to create the smoke which causes soot on our gear and a strong smokey smell on the gear and our personal clothes. We are hoping to get a smoke/fog machine to be able to use in our trailer as well as other areas (homes/businesses) for training.

smoke makers are easy to build (You can make one out of an old bbq/ smoker and a small induction blower)
but you need to be careful of what you use to create the smoke.
burlap (same as used in bee keeping) produces a white smoke that will disperse quickly.
avoid oily rags of any kind oil vapors can often explode! while hay does produce copious amounts of smoke it is very messy.
rubber produces dense carbon black smoke but will leave a horrid residue
and green weeds can produce a lot of smoke but risk irritating fumes.
avoid pvc plastics like a plague the smoke is dense white and toxic.
cotton and wool rags produce a lot of white smoke but needs aggressive air to keep burning. and is by far a safer choice
