WOONSOCKET, R.I. - A cause hasn't yet been pinpointed in a fire at an abandoned mill complex in Woonsocket that caused evacuations of nearby homes.

The blaze was reported early Sunday afternoon, with firefighters from Woonsocket and from surrounding communities called in to fight the fire. The flames were knocked down around 6 p.m.

WPRI-TV reports the abandoned mill was the former headquarters for the Seville Dye Company. Chemicals in the building helped fuel the blaze and spread fumes throughout the neighborhood, with witnesses describing thick black smoke coming from the complex.
