This is a link to a photo and story where my dept was called out to a single vehicle collision with entrapment and engine compartment fire on I-35 in Iowa. Officers quicky arrived on scene to extinguish the growing fire, Attack 702 was first on scene. Found a male patient trapped by the dash and steering wheel. The drivers side door was sheared off hanging on by the bottom hinge. Patient was wearing his seatbelt concious alert and breathing. Due to the mangled mess that once served as a small SUV, Extrication took approximately 55 minutes. The roof was removed and dashed rolled even further. The interstate was shut down (by way of a miracle) and the patient was eventually freed and flown by air ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol and speed played a huge factor.
Back in March, a few members of my FD, myself included, tried to do a pre-prom accident scenario to discourage drinking and driving as well as teach the importance of seat belts, however due to lack of interest and support the event never happened.
Does your community FD put on such events? Do you have successful amount of interest as well as support? What other community education programs do you have in place to encourage Seat belt use as well as the effects of drinking and driving???
