BURRILLVILLE, R.I. - Authorities say a Burrillville man was taken to the hospital with first- and second-degree burns after his garage exploded with him inside.

The man's garage went up in flames just before 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Assistant Fire Chief Ed Raposo says the fire spread to the house, causing extensive damage. The victim, who suffered burns to the hands, face and back, was home alone at the time and no one else was hurt.

Fire officials have not said what caused the explosion, which remains under investigation.

Firefighters from eight departments responded.
